I might have a new favorite grocery store – Publix

Being new to Georgia, I’m new to Publix.  I’ve been reading Sarah’s blog, Fiddledeedee! to learn about the Publix deals and there are many!!

Our first week here I honestly thought all the BOGOF items (buy one, get one free for all my non-coupon friends 🙂 was just a lucky shot for me that week; however, I have discovered that Publix has BOGOF items EVERY week!  Combine the BOGOF offers with 2 coupons (one for each item) and the savings can really add up, plus they double up to .50 coupons!  Whoo Hooo!!!!!

I budget $40 a week for groceries for our family of 4.  We are still living in a hotel until we can close on our new house and there is no oven so the amount of cooking going on here is very little 🙂  With that said, I don’t have to buy groceries right now, but with such great deals I can’t turn them down!  Here’s a picture of what I got at Publix.  Because this is my blog and I can, I’ve listed the price that I paid for each item after coupons (and just for my friend that doesn’t do the grocery shopping in her house, I noted the sales price for each item before coupons in parenthesis)!

  • 2 V8 Splash ($2.99 each) .99 each
  • 2 Motts Apple Juice ($2.89 each) .46 each
  • 2 Prego Sauce ($2.29) 1.15 each
  • 2 Duncan Hines Cake Mix ($1.57) .79 each
  • 2 Milano Cookies ($3.39) $1.50 each
  • 2 Ken’s Marinade ($2.79) .90 each
  • 2 Reddi-Whip Cream ($2.00) $1.00 each
  • 2 Lipton Tea ($2.50) $2.12 each
  • Purina Dog Busy Bones $3.59
  • Purina Dog Beggin Strips FREE
  • Publix Wavy Dog Treats FREE

Because I was able to save so much on the items above, I was also able to get some great sandwich bread, sliced turkey, sliced cheese and some yummy chips and I still came in slightly under budget at $38.48!

Publix also has a weekly program “Try Theirs, Get Ours for Free.”  With this program you purchase a name brand product and receive the Publix brand equivelent for FREE!  Each week a different product or two is featured.  This week I scored an awesome deal on some doggie treats.  The Publix deal was buy a package of Purina dog beggin strips and get a bag of Publix wavy dog treats for free.  I was able to sweeten the deal because I had a coupon to get a free bag of beggin stips if I bought a bag of busy bones – which my dog loves!  So I got approx. $9 of dog treats for about $3.50!  That just makes my heart sing!

My least favorite thing

My least favorite thing as a mom is potty training!  I had a difficult time potty training Brad and that is probably why I’ve put off potty training Nick.  In fact, I would gladly pay someone else to do the potty training for me . . . but I’ve had no takers.

I’ve had lots of excuses over the summer, granted they were good excuses – like moving.  I bought a potty for Nick a few weeks ago, shortly after arriving in Georgia.  After realizing that we were going to have to be out of the hotel during the day (2 boys in a small hotel room with lots of energy is not a good thing:) I had another excuse for not potty training – it’s difficult to potty train when you are out touring the city!

However, this week my excuses have run out.  Brad is back in school so it is just me and Nick during the day and I decided the time was now or never.

We started our potty training adventure with a trip to the library.  We picked out lots of books about the potty for Nick and some for mom too (after a difficult time with the first child I decided that any potty training method books I could get my hands on would be a good thing).  We also got a potty training dvd to watch in the car.  As we left the library, I put the dvd in so Nick could watch it on the way back to the hotel.  I had never seen this dvd and nobody had warned me about it, but as I am listening to it describe all the body parts and their functions I’m praying that the person in the car behind me is not looking at my dvd screen!

I made it clear to Nick that there are no more pull ups, except at night.  He seemed to understand.  Monday started out okay.  He went when I told him to but he also went when I didn’t and the concept of stopping what you are doing and go sit on your potty seemed lost.

Day 2 was harder, the potty thing was old news and not considered “fun” anymore.  He no longer wanted to go when I told him to so it was a VERY long day and I was a little moody by evening time.

I woke up this morning (day 3) sort of dreading another day of potty training, but my little guy surprised me!  He woke up dry and without me telling him, he went and sat on his potty!!!!!  WHOO HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!  Wish us luck as we continue into day 3.

Here’s my advice for parents that might be taking on the challenge of potty training in the near future:

  • do not listen to your mother when she tells you that you were potty trained before you were walking – you were not potty trained, your mother was!
  • buy undies several sizes too big so that they can pull them up and down by themselves
  • consider getting a hotel room for a few days – better their carpet than yours
  • if you choose to reward your child with candy for using the potty, then buy some candy for yourself too or better yet schedule a pedicure at the end of the week for yourself!

We took the kids to a hibachi restaurant and they had so much fun!  They both loved watching the fire and all of the tricks our chef did with the food.  Also seated at our table was a dad with his 2 young girls (mom was out of town).  I couldn’t help but laugh at the dads logic . . . mom goes out of town . . . dad wants a decent meal . . . kids need to be entertained . . . so he picks hibachi!

Girl Tools!

Is this not the cuttest tool bag you’ve ever seen?  I got it at Walmart for about $20.00 and it is full of tool essentials!

When I moved out of my parents house for college, my mom gave me the cutest, most useful tool set.  All of the tools had painted flowers on them and all the tools attached to a matching flower plaque to hang on the wall.  At the time I probably thought it was the weirdest gift, but it was great and I think everyone in the sorority house used my tools at some point!  Then, when hubby and I got married my mother-in-law gave me my own tool box filled with my own tools.  It has been very useful throughout our marriage since I can’t ever find anything in our garage (hahahaha); however, I have no tools here in GA with me and I needed a screwdriver to put my license plate on my car and I needed a tape measure to measure some of the rooms in our new house.  I decided I could pick up some cheap tools at Walmart to get me through until our stuff gets here . . . but then I spotted this cute bag!

I just love that it is pink and all the tools inside are pink!

You need to check out this post on Jordan’s blog!  Jordan is one of our pastors at our Texas church and I highly respect him.  His sermons make me dig deeper and are definately not just “surface” material.  This post gave me goosebumps . . . God is so good!  Be sure to click on the link to read it for yourself!

I haven’t had near as much time to knit as I thought I would, but I have made a little progress on the scarf I brought with me.  The pattern is called “whimsical” and I’m using a yarn that I got at the awsome December sale at The Woolie Ewe in Plano, TX.  I would give you the details on the yarn, but I didn’t bring the ballband with me.  If I remember correctly, the yarn is from Brazil . . . I chose it for the colors.  You can’t really make out the pattern from the picture, but it is an eyelet type design with a 12 row repeat.
