This Weeks Publix Deals + Rebates!

I made a large purchase at Publix this weekend that I split into 2 transactions to make filing for the 2 different rebates a bit easier!  I went $20 over our $50 weekly budget, but I will be earning $20 back in rebates!

Ebay

My first transaction was to qualify for the Kellogg’s/Dell Rebate “Fuel for School.”  To qualify for the rebate you had to purchase 10 kellogg’s products to receive a $10 rebate check and a $70 coupon code from Dell.  I don’t plan on buying a Dell anytime soon, so I won’t be using the Dell coupon code, but I will gladly take the $10 rebate check and the 10 boxes of Kellogg’s products for .60!  Here’s the breakdown of my transaction:

  • 2 Frosted Flakes BOGOF, less $1 coupon = $1.50 each
  • 2 Corn Pops BOGOF, less $1 coupon = $1.49 each
  • 6 Boxes of Pop Tarts BOGOF, less 3 $1 coupons = .70 each

Transaction #1 Details:

Total Purchased $30.70

Total Spent $10.60

Total Saved $20.10

Total Rebate Submitted $10.00

My second transaction was a lot bigger to qualify for a $10 Publix gift card.  The requirements were to buy a minimum of $50 worth of purchases from Publix, including 4 different participating KRAFT products in a single transaction.  The rebate form did not state if the $50 spent at Publix was before or after coupons, so to play it safe I made sure my total was above $50 after coupons.  I’ve highlighted my qualifying KRAFT purchases at the bottom of the breakdown, I actually purchased 5 items instead of 4 and spent a total of $8 on those 5 items, earning myself a $10 Publix giftcard!

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 3 Louana Veg oil BOGOF = $1.70 each

My sister and her family are visiting us this week from Texas! We are so happy to have them here, but we still have to grocery shop! I headed to Pulbix while they visited the Coca Cola Museum!  I had already made my big week purchases before my sis arrived, so I only picked up a couple of the sale items at Publix.

    2 Publix Trips this Weekend

I went to Publix twice this past weekend because I had a coupon for Pam Cooking Spray that was going to expire on Saturday night but I also wanted to wait and see what the .01 mystery coupon would be for Sunday/Monday.  To use the mystery coupon, you have to make a $10 purchase so I split my list in half and bought my first half on Saturday so I could use my coupon for Pam spray!

On my first trip I was in the cracker/snack aisle and there was another lady there that stopped me and said “look at this deal! These Keebler crackers are BOGOF and there’s a peelie coupon on the box for $1 off when you buy 2!”  I hadn’t orginially planned on purchasing the crackers because I didn’t have a coupon, but the peelie on the box made them $1.50 each and that’s a great deal!  I totally would have missed this deal if it wasn’t for the angel in the aisle 🙂

    Here’s my first trip:

    bag-036

    • Pam Spray BOGOF $1.70, less .35 coupon, doubled = $1
    • Betty Crocker Brownie Mix BOGOF $1.35, less .50 coupon, doubled = .35
    • 2 Del Monte Diced Tomatoes BOGOF $1.49, less 2 .40 coupons, doubled = (.11)  yes, that’s correct, Pulbix paid me .11 to take 2 cans of tomatoes off their shelf!!
    • 4 Kellogg Pop Tarts BOGOF, less 2 $1 coupons = .70 each
    • 2 Mueller Spaghetti BOGOF, less .55 coupon = .37 each
    • Large Strawberries $3.29
    • 2 Keebler crackers BOGOF, less $1 coupon = $1.50 each

    Total Purchased = $39.60

    Total Savings = $28.07

    Total OOP = $11.53

    Here’s my second trip:

    bag-037

The mystery coupon was suppose to be for Publix bath tissue, not very exciting as I’m picky about my toilet paper; however, because of the SNOW the manager at my Publix changed the mystery coupon to Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate!!  Whoo Hoo!!  I drink a cup of  hot chocolate almost everyday (in lieu of coffee) and I’m almost out!

    • Bread $2.69
    • Tortillas $2.09 (no coupon but needed these for dinner this week 🙂
    • Lipton Tea Bags BOGOF = $1.98
    • Cap n’ Crunch BOGOF = $2.25
    • Ground Chuck $1.99/lb
    • Kraft Shredded Cheese = $1.67 each
    • Classico Pasta Sauce BOGOF, less $1 coupon = .74 each
    • Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate, mystery coupon = .01

    Total Savings = $16.11

Publix Deals and A Ethical Question
    February 25, 2009, 7:00 am

I was going to skip this weeks shopping trip, but then Publix sent me a $5 off $30 purchase and I just couldn’t turn that down!  The $30 purchase is BEFORE coupons so I got some great deals!

An interesting thing happen with my shredded cheese purchase.  Sargento Shredded Cheese is 2/$4 this week at Publix and I had a .40 coupon that would double making the cheese $1.60 a package (I consider anything under $1.67 a package a good deal since that is the price I can get for Kroger brand cheese).

My 2 packages of cheese each had a peelie coupon on them for .75 off the cheese when you also purchase an artisan bread.  I wasn’t going to buy any artisan bread so I just left the peelie coupons on the packages.  While I was checking out, the cashier pulled the peelies off and ran the two .75 coupons.  I spoke up and said “I think those are only if I purchase the bread and I didn’t purchase the bread.”  The cashier didn’t say anything and the coupons scanned.

After everything was scanned and I handed him my stack of coupons and I told him “I have a coupon for the cheese in there that might not go through since there were coupons on the package.”  Well, my .40 coupon did scan and double which means I saved an additional $1.50 on my cheese making the cheese I purchased .85 a package!

Of course I’m happy to save the extra $1.50 and I know that Publix is still going to get their money for the coupons (to understand how coupons work visit How Stuff Works) but I also pride myself on correctly using coupons.  I don’t knowingly try to slide a coupon through that isn’t what I purchased, is expired or in any other way doesn’t abide by the store policy.

My thought is that I save a lot of money on groceries and I love the challenge of getting the best deal possible, but only if I can do it fairly.  It’s not fun if I have to cheat the store or the manufacturer and honestly that makes it hard to sleep at night.

So, do you think I did the right thing?  I spoke up not only once, but twice and the cashier chose to scan the coupons and the register didn’t beep (actually, I’ve never heard the register at Publix beep on any coupon).  Looking back at the situation, I could have pulled out my .40 coupon before handing the cashier my stack of coupons but I honestly didn’t think of that while I was standing there.  What would you have done?
